Meditation Title: Spendthrifts of Time
Stoic Quote
“Were all the geniuses of history to focus on this single theme, they could never fully express their bafflement at the darkness of the human mind. No person would give up even an inch of their estate, and the slightest dispute with a neighbor can mean hell to pay; yet we easily let others encroach on our lives—worse, we often pave the way for those who will take it over. No person hands out their money to passersby, but to how many do each of us hand out our lives! We’re tight-fisted with property and money, yet think too little of wasting time, the one thing about which we should all be the toughest misers.”
— Seneca, On the Brevity of Life
Stoic Insight
- People fiercely protect money and possessions.
- Yet we casually allow others to consume our time, the most limited resource we possess.
- Distractions, interruptions, and obligations slowly steal our lives.
- Wisdom requires guarding time for reflection and meaningful living.
Core Stoic principle: Time is our most valuable resource and must be guarded carefully.
Alignment with Biblical Wisdom
Scripture strongly agrees that time and life are precious gifts.
- Life is brief and fragile.
- Wisdom involves using time intentionally.
- Believers should live thoughtfully before God.
- The heart and mind must be guarded.
Where Christianity Goes Further
Stoicism emphasizes self-discipline and personal reflection.
Christianity roots the value of time in God’s purpose and eternal perspective.
- Time is a gift from God.
- Our goal is faithfulness, not merely productivity.
- Reflection should lead us to prayer and communion with God.
- Life is evaluated by eternal fruit, not efficiency.

Christ Connection
Jesus modeled perfect stewardship of time.
- He regularly withdrew to pray (Luke 5:16).
- He refused distractions that did not align with His mission (Mark 1:35–38).
- Every moment of His life served the Father’s will.
Through Christ we learn that time is not merely to be protected but redeemed for God’s kingdom.
Reflection Questions
- What distractions are currently stealing my time?
- Am I making space each day for God and Scripture?
- If my schedule reveals my priorities, what does it say about my faith?
Prayer
Lord,
Teach me to value the time You have given me.
Help me guard my heart and days from distractions that pull me away from You.
Give me wisdom to live intentionally for Your kingdom.
Amen.
Action Step Today
- Set aside 10–15 minutes of uninterrupted time with God.
- Identify one distraction to remove or reduce today.
- Use a portion of your time today intentionally for reflection or prayer.
