WHAT’S TRULY IMPRESSIVE
Quote
“How much better is it to be known for doing well by many than for living extravagantly? How much more worthy than spending on sticks and stones is it to spend on people?”
— Musonius Rufus, Lectures, 19.91.26–28
Insight
- True Legacy: Real prestige is found in character and service, not in the accumulation of material objects or “sticks and stones.”
- Investment in People: The Stoics believed that resources are best used when they benefit the community and strengthen relationships.
- Simple Living: Avoiding extravagance allows for greater generosity. Living simply is a hallmark of a virtuous life.
- The Trap of External Validation: We often seek to impress people we don’t even know with things that don’t actually matter, rather than making a meaningful impact on those around us.
Biblical Wisdom
The Stoic emphasis on people over possessions aligns perfectly with the Christian call to stewardship and love. While the Stoics focused on the social utility of generosity, Christian theology roots this in the Imago Dei—every person has inherent value because they are made in God’s image. Jesus warned that “a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15) and commanded us to store up treasures in heaven rather than on earth.
Bible Correspondence
Primary Scripture:
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19–21 ESV)

Christ Connection
Jesus modeled the ultimate “investment in people” by emptying Himself of heavenly glory to serve and save humanity (Philippians 2:5-8). He didn’t build palaces of stone; He built a kingdom of people. His life was the definition of “doing well by many” at the highest personal cost, showing that the most “impressive” thing one can do is to lay down their life for their friends.
Reflection
Questions:
- What am I currently spending my “sticks and stones” on that could be redirected toward people?
- Whose opinion am I trying to influence with my lifestyle, and does their opinion actually matter?
- How can I practice “covenant kindness” (hesed) today in a way that is truly impressive to God?
Prayer:
Lord, help me to value what You value. Guard my heart against the lure of extravagance and the trap of trying to impress others with material things. Teach me to invest my time, energy, and resources into the people You have placed in my life. Amen.
Action Step:
Identify one person today who is in need—whether of time, encouragement, or financial help—and invest in them without seeking recognition.
