Revelation 2:18-29, Thyatira, the guilds and Jezebel

To Thyatira the Son of God, with eyes like fire and feet like bronze, praises a growing church but rebukes it for tolerating Jezebel, a self-styled prophetess who leads his servants into immorality and idol food. Those who hold fast are promised authority over the nations and the morning star.

What is going on here

Jesus, pictured with piercing eyes and gleaming feet, commends Thyatira for growing love, faith and service. But the church puts up with a self-appointed prophetess he nicknames Jezebel, who is leading members into idol meals and sexual sin, and he warns of judgment on her and her followers so that every church will know he sees into the heart. Those who have refused her teaching need only hold firm, and the faithful are promised a share in his rule and the morning star. Whether her immorality is literal or figurative is debated.

Thyatira's records name more trade guilds than any other Asian city (the Zondervan dictionary). Each guild met for meals, usually monthly, dedicated to its patron god (Keener), often in its temple (the dictionary); "To refuse to share the meal was tantamount to refusing connection" with members one needed to make a living (the cultural backgrounds notes). Metalworking led its trades, so bronze feet would strike home (the cultural backgrounds notes; Keener). Wright notes that the bronze trade's patron, Apollo Tyrimnaeus, appeared on coins with the emperor as son of god, which sharpens the only Son of God in Revelation. Jezebel led Israel into idolatry; here the name labels a local prophetess (the cultural backgrounds notes; Keener), chosen, the dictionary suggests, because Ahab's marriage sealed a trade alliance, and perhaps standing for a group. Whether her immorality is literal is debated: both may be present (the cultural backgrounds notes), probably spiritual (Keener), mainly idolatry (Wright); Heiser reads her as a figure for pagan religion. The morning star was Venus, and Numbers 24:17 was read of the Messiah (the cultural backgrounds notes; Keener). Heiser says the fallen gods now ruling the nations "will be displaced and replaced" by believers.
