The Fringe Files
Ancient aliens, lost civilisations and the occult, checked against what the sources actually say.
- Who are the Anunnaki? Ancient astronauts who visited earth in the past. Not ancient astronauts: a Sumerian word for "princely seed," misread by one author with no training in the language.
- Nibiru (Planet X) is a hidden planet that appears every 3,600 years and will bring global catastrophe. No Sumerian or Babylonian text describes a doomsday planet on a 3,600-year orbit; Michael Heiser checked every occurrence of the word himself.
- Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs at the Temple of Seti I in Abydos depict a helicopter, submarine, and other modern machines: proof of ancient advanced technology or alien contact. Two pharaohs' inscriptions overlapping, a documented process with a name, not a flying machine.
- Did the Israelites build the Egyptian pyramids? The Bible never says the Israelites built the pyramids, and the archaeology of who did build them tells a different, better-attested story.
- Were giant human skeletons discovered in ancient Egyptian tombs? The viral photo of a giant skeleton unearthed beside a pyramid has a known creator, a known contest, and a documented paper trail leading nowhere near an actual excavation.
- Are we alone in the universe, or is there other life out there? This is one of the rare questions on this list with no debunking to do, because no one, believer or scientist, actually knows the answer yet.
- Atlantis was a real advanced civilization that got wiped out in a catastrophic flood, and Plato's account is proof that an ancient global flood really happened. Atlantis itself is almost certainly Plato's own invention, not history, but the flood-catastrophe tradition it borrows its drama from is a genuine, well-documented ancient memory that scholars have compared to Genesis for over 150 years.
- The hills near Visoko, Bosnia are actually ancient pyramids, bigger and older than Egypt's, built by a lost advanced civilization that mainstream archaeology refuses to acknowledge. The Visoko hills are ordinary geological formations, not pyramids, and Genesis already describes real, sophisticated ancient city-building without needing a secret lost civilization to explain it.
- Göbekli Tepe is reliably dated to around 9600 BC, thousands of years before creation on most biblical timelines, so it disproves Genesis outright. Göbekli Tepe's radiocarbon dates are a real, specific problem for young-earth genealogical chronologies, and young-earth organizations have written directly about it by name, not ducked it.
- The Majestic-12 documents prove the U.S. government secretly recovered a crashed alien spacecraft and non-human bodies at Roswell in 1947 and has been running a cover-up ever since. The Majestic-12 papers are almost certainly forgeries, per both the UFO research community's own investigators and a forensic linguistics study commissioned by evangelical Old Testament scholar Michael Heiser, who also argued the UFO cover-up mythology built around them is doing a specific theological job.
- Are dinosaurs in the Bible? Job 40-41's Behemoth and Leviathan describe dinosaurs, and the KJV's 'dragons' prove humans and dinosaurs coexisted. Serious readers land in three different places on Behemoth and Leviathan, and one part of the claim, the KJV 'dragons,' turns out to rest on a translation mix-up, not a species.
- Genesis 6:1-4's "sons of God" who took human wives and fathered the Nephilim were literal extraterrestrials, and the passage is an ancient record of alien-human hybridization. Genesis 6:1-4 is the single most argued-over four verses in the Old Testament, and ancient-astronaut theory is not one of the readings serious interpreters actually debate.
- The giant clans of Canaan (the Anakim, the Rephaim, Og of Bashan with his nine-cubit iron bed, and Goliath's kin at Gath) prove the Nephilim survived the Flood as a hybrid super-race Israel had to hunt down, or, on the opposite extreme, they are dismissed as pure legend invented to make ordinary rival peoples sound scarier. Deuteronomy and Joshua single out named giant clans for conquest by name across four books, and both the skeptics who wave it all away and the fringe readers who inflate it into a hybrid-race saga miss what the text actually claims.
- Ezekiel's vision of wheels within wheels, four-faced living creatures, and a fire-wrapped throne in Ezekiel 1 is an eyewitness description of a UFO landing: a claim taken more seriously because it was seriously analyzed by an actual NASA engineer. Ezekiel's vision has real aerospace-engineer analysis behind its UFO reading, but the chapter's own language, and twenty-five centuries of Jewish and Christian interpretation, describe something else: the mobile throne of God.
- The Ark of the Covenant was an electrical device (a giant battery or capacitor), and Uzzah in 2 Samuel 6 was not struck down by God for touching it, he was electrocuted. The electric-Ark theory predates Erich von Däniken by nearly two centuries, and the object Exodus actually describes could not have worked as the capacitor the theory requires.
- Thousands of carved stones from Ica, Peru show humans hunting and riding dinosaurs: proof that people and dinosaurs coexisted, exactly like the Bible describes with Behemoth and Leviathan. The carver of the Ica Stones was arrested, confessed to copying the images from comic books and magazines, and the museum's own founder built his collection on stones bought from that same man.
- Noah's Ark has actually been found: on Mount Ararat, at the boat-shaped Durupınar site in Turkey, or in a cave a Chinese-Turkish team filmed in 2010, take your pick. The most publicized modern 'Ark discovery' was a staged hoax with planted wood, and the geological formation everyone points to on Ararat is natural rock.
- The Sumerian King List records pre-Flood kings reigning tens of thousands of years each: proof, skeptics say, that Genesis borrowed and shrank its numbers from Babylonian myth, or, for ancient-astronaut readers, proof of a real lost antediluvian civilization with superhuman lifespans. The two lists share a flood-divided structure but not their names, their numbers, or what those numbers even count, which is a case for shared ancient Near Eastern convention, not literary borrowing.
- Medieval and Renaissance religious paintings sometimes show flying saucers or UFOs floating in the sky behind the main figures: proof aliens have been visiting for centuries. The disc-shaped objects cited as UFOs in famous religious paintings are documented pieces of Christian iconography: glory-clouds, Annunciation symbolism, and personified sun and moon, not unidentified aircraft.
- Is there a hidden code in the Hebrew text of the Torah that predicts modern events, as claimed in Michael Drosnin's book The Bible Code? The statistical method behind The Bible Code was rebutted in the same peer-reviewed journal that first published it, and critics reproduced comparable 'predictions' in Moby-Dick and in Drosnin's own book.
- Who was Alice Bailey, and did she really channel a spirit called 'The Tibetan'? Alice Bailey said an ascended master named Djwhal Khul telepathically dictated twenty-four books to her over three decades, founding a school that still shapes New Age teaching on 'ascended masters' and the coming 'World Teacher.'
- Who was Annie Besant, and why did she present a teenage boy as the new Messiah? Annie Besant, the Theosophical Society's second president, spent two decades grooming Jiddu Krishnamurti as the vehicle for a returning 'World Teacher,' until he publicly rejected the role in 1929.
- Who was Helena Blavatsky, and was she exposed as a fraud? Helena Petrovna Blavatsky co-founded the Theosophical Society and claimed secret contact with hidden 'Masters,' but a formal 1885 investigation into her physical 'phenomena' concluded she was a fraud: a verdict the same society partially walked back a century later.
- Does Isis Unveiled prove that ancient wisdom traditions all agree on a hidden truth? Blavatsky's 1877 Isis Unveiled was marketed as a revelation of ancient hidden wisdom, but the researcher William Emmette Coleman later traced roughly 2,000 unattributed passages in it back to about 100 contemporary nineteenth-century books.
- What is Anthroposophy, and is it different from Theosophy? Anthroposophy is Rudolf Steiner's breakaway spiritual system, built on claimed clairvoyant research into reincarnation and spiritual worlds, that still underwrites Waldorf education and biodynamic farming today.
- Who was Rudolf Steiner, and what did he actually claim to teach? Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher and editor of Goethe's scientific works, went from academic philosophy to leading Germany's Theosophical Society to founding his own 'spiritual science,' Anthroposophy, built on his own claimed clairvoyant research.
- What was Ariosophy, and how directly did it feed into Nazi ideology? Ariosophy fused Theosophical occultism with völkisch Aryan-supremacist racial myth in early-1900s Austria and Germany, and the standard scholarly history concludes it helped form the ideological climate that made Nazi racial mysticism culturally acceptable.
- Who was Guido von List, and what did his 'Armanen runes' actually come from? Guido von List, a Vienna-born journalist who claimed to revive an ancient pagan Germanic priesthood, invented his signature 'Armanen runes' himself in 1902 and built an occult racial hierarchy around them that helped originate the Ariosophy movement.
- Who was Jörg Lanz von Liebenfels, and did his magazine really shape Hitler's antisemitism? Jörg Lanz von Liebenfels, a former Cistercian monk turned occultist, built a racial-mystical theology he called 'Ariosophy' and published it in the magazine Ostara, which a teenage Adolf Hitler collected in prewar Vienna.
- 666 is the mark of the beast: a barcode, a microchip, or some future digital ID system hidden in Revelation 13:18 John tells his readers to calculate a number tied to "a man" in their own time. Nero Caesar is the usual candidate, though the arithmetic only works by switching languages.
- The Hebrew letters aleph and tav (את) appear right before "God" in Genesis 1:1 as a hidden, encoded reference to Jesus Christ, since he calls himself "the Alpha and the Omega" in Revelation The two letters that supposedly spell out Jesus's name in Genesis 1:1 are the single most common word in the Hebrew Bible: a grammatical marker that shows up about eleven thousand times, most of which have nothing to do with God at all.
- The Zohar is an ancient, secret text of Kabbalah going back to a 2nd-century rabbi, Shimon bar Yochai, who received it directly from God The foundational text of Kabbalah claims to be a 2nd-century revelation to a rabbi hiding in a cave, but its own vocabulary, its citations of medieval philosophy, and the paper trail of the man who "discovered" it all point to 13th-century Spain.
- Kabbalah is just the mystical, deeper layer of the Bible: the secret meaning hidden underneath the plain text that Judaism has always taught Kabbalah is a real and influential stream of Jewish thought, but it is a medieval mystical system built on top of the Hebrew Bible, not a hidden code embedded within it that the text's original authors and audience were working with.
- The "Book of Jasher" you can buy today is the actual lost book quoted in Joshua 10:13 and 2 Samuel 1:18: a real, ancient sacred text that survived outside the Bible The Bible really does quote a lost "Book of Jasher" twice, but neither printed English edition sold under that name today is that book; one is a documented 18th-century literary hoax and the other is a medieval Hebrew story-collection with no real claim to the original.
- Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married, or romantically involved, and the Church covered it up, a claim popularized by The Da Vinci Code and drawn from the Gnostic gospels No canonical or non-canonical ancient text actually states that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married; the strongest "evidence" ever produced for the claim (a papyrus scrap unveiled in 2012) was exposed within a few years as a modern forgery.
- Gnosticism is basically Christianity with extra secret knowledge: a legitimate spiritual path that teaches you can find God within by learning hidden truths Gnostic systems don't add secret extra-credit material to Christian doctrine: they reject its most basic claim, that the Creator of the material world is the same good God revealed in Christ.
- Gnosticism was the original, earlier form of Christianity: a more authentic movement that the institutional Church later suppressed, rewrote, and buried The manuscript and historical record shows Gnostic Christian movements emerging as offshoots and reactions to an already-established apostolic Christianity in the 2nd century, not as an earlier, purer form of the faith that was later stamped out.
- Billy Carson's on-air authority as an ancient-civilizations and neuroscience 'expert' rests on real MIT and Harvard credentials. Billy Carson's MIT and Harvard credentials are real short non-degree courses, not the ancient-history doctorate his 'expert' branding implies, and no independent investigation was found to substantiate the harsher fraud claims that circulate about him online.
- A dark, artificial object called the 'Black Knight satellite' has silently orbited Earth for thousands of years, and NASA has covered up its extraterrestrial origin. The object at the center of Billy Carson's 2019 documentary is a NASA thermal blanket that astronaut Jerry Ross lost on a 1998 spacewalk, tracked by NORAD under its own catalog number, and watched burn up in the atmosphere two weeks later.
- The Anunnaki were an advanced extraterrestrial species from the planet Nibiru who arrived on Earth roughly 450,000 years ago, genetically engineered humans as a labor species, and are described doing so in ancient Sumerian texts. Carson's Anunnaki-as-astronauts content rests almost entirely on Zecharia Sitchin's translations, which working Sumerologists and the late biblical scholar Michael Heiser showed do not match what the cuneiform tablets actually say.
- The Genesis creation account is copied word-for-word from the Babylonian Enuma Elish, and core biblical claims (including the crucifixion of Jesus) are historically unreliable. In a nationally viral October 2024 debate, Carson could not produce the 'word-for-word' overlap between Genesis and the Enuma Elish he claimed existed, and New Testament scholar Wesley Huff walked through why the comparison, and Carson's crucifixion-denial claim, don't hold up.
- Did aliens build the pyramids and other monuments of ancient Egypt? No Aliens Required: Egypt Built Its Own Monuments, and the Bible Never Says Otherwise
- American newspapers in the 1800s and early 1900s reported giant human skeletons unearthed from mounds and farm fields across the country. What happened to them all? The Giants Are Real in Scripture; the Skeletons in the Papers Weren't
- Some of these giant skeletons were reportedly found with a 'double row of teeth,' doesn't that prove they weren't ordinary humans? A Double Row of Teeth Is a Known Human Condition, Not Evidence of Giants
- Thousands of people report being abducted, examined, or contacted by aliens. What's really happening to them? Something Is Happening to Abduction Experiencers, but the Evidence Doesn't Point to Aliens
- Does the Victory Stele of Naram-Sin show ancient astronauts, a UFO, or giants among the Akkadians? The 'UFO' on Naram-Sin's Stele Is a King Declaring Himself a God
- A technologically advanced global civilization existed before the Younger Dryas and was wiped out in a cataclysm around 12,900 years ago: the thesis of Graham Hancock's Netflix series Ancient Apocalypse. Lost Civilization Theory Doesn't Explain the Flood Stories: It Competes With the Explanation Genesis Already Gives
- Ancient Egyptian carvings like the Narmer Palette's long-necked beasts prove humans and dinosaurs coexisted The intertwined-neck creatures on the 5,000-year-old Narmer Palette are a cataloged genre of Egyptian mythological beast, not a sauropod sighting, but the claim borrows credibility from a real, still-argued fight over what the Bible's Behemoth actually was.
- A 12th-century carving at Ta Prohm temple near Angkor Wat shows a stegosaurus, proving dinosaurs survived into human history The hand-sized carving at Ta Prohm reads as a plated dinosaur only if you crop out the matching leaf-motif backgrounds carved behind every other animal on the same wall.
- Thousands of clay figurines dug up at Acámbaro, Mexico, include accurate dinosaur models too detailed for anyone who hadn't seen a living dinosaur The figurines are a documented 1940s forgery ring, not a lost record of dinosaurs, but the claim keeps circulating because it's plugged into a real theological argument about Job's Behemoth.
- The 'Baghdad Battery' (a roughly 2,000-year-old clay jar containing a copper cylinder and iron rod, found near Baghdad) was an ancient electrical battery, proof of lost advanced technology The jar most likely held a decayed scroll, not a charge, and Genesis already makes a bolder, unremarked claim about early metalworking than "ancient people had a battery" ever could.
- Geologist Robert Schoch's water-erosion analysis shows the Great Sphinx is really 7,000 to 12,000 years old, thousands of years older than mainstream Egyptology allows Schoch's rain-erosion case for a vastly older Sphinx has a serious mainstream rebuttal on the geology itself, and only one identifiable, narrow young-earth source engages the claim directly at all.
