The Fringe Files
Ancient aliens, lost civilisations and the occult, checked against what the sources actually say.
Billy Carson's on-air authority as an ancient-civilizations and neuroscience 'expert' rests on real MIT and Harvard credentials.
Billy Carson's MIT and Harvard credentials are real short non-degree courses, not the ancient-history doctorate his 'expert' branding implies, and no independent investigation was found to substantiate the harsher fraud claims that circulate about him online.
Carson's own bio page at 4biddenknowledge.com and his IMDb page both list exactly two academic credentials: a "Certificate of Science (with an emphasis on Neuroscience)" from MIT, and a "certificate in Ancient Civilization" from Harvard University. Podcast appearances pin the MIT credential to MIT Sloan Executive Education, the business school's paid, open-enrollment short-course division, specifically a roughly two-day "applied neuroscience" course completed around October 2018, not the MIT that grants PhDs through competitive admission. The Harvard credential traces the same way: Carson has said he enrolled in 2019 to study ancient civilizations, consistent with Harvard Extension School's open-enrollment continuing-education certificates, not Harvard's graduate programs in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations or Anthropology, which require years of supervised study.
Neither credential is a doctorate, and neither is in archaeology, Egyptology, Assyriology, or any field that would qualify someone to adjudicate ancient Near Eastern texts and artifacts, which is exactly the terrain Carson stakes his authority on nightly across Gaia specials, History Channel appearances, and his own 4biddenknowledge platform. The real, verifiable issue is not that the certificates are forged; it's that a two-day executive-education course and an open-enrollment extension-school certificate are presented, implicitly, as comparable to the training of the Sumerologists, Egyptologists, and biblical-studies PhDs whose conclusions he routinely overrides on air.
What This record cannot verify: despite widespread online claims that Carson's credentials are outright "fake" or that a formal journalistic investigation exposed a fabricated PhD, no such investigation turned up in research for This record. A number of nearly identical, unsigned "investigation" articles about Carson circulate across unrelated websites (marketing blogs, foreign SEO domains, even a hacked-looking institutional subdomain) reusing the same boilerplate phrases, a pattern typical of AI-generated content-farm spam rather than original reporting, and none names a reporter, institution, or verifiable method. They are not cited here as evidence of anything. The one clearly documented, named confrontation over Carson's scholarly authority is his October 2024 debate with Wesley Huff (see the companion Fringe Files entry), where a genuine New Testament PhD candidate pressed Carson in real time and Carson could not substantiate his own textual claims.
