A 12th-century carving at Ta Prohm temple near Angkor Wat shows a stegosaurus, proving dinosaurs survived into human history
The hand-sized carving at Ta Prohm reads as a plated dinosaur only if you crop out the matching leaf-motif backgrounds carved behind every other animal on the same wall.
Job 40:15, in every translation this tool compares.
This carving rides the same underlying claim covered in the entry on Egyptian "dinosaur" art: that Job 40's Behemoth describes a literal dinosaur, and that physical artifacts should exist to back it up. Photographs of the small roundel carving at Ta Prohm (part of the Angkor temple complex built under Suryavarman VII in the late 1100s AD) began circulating among young-earth creationists including Don Patton in the mid-2000s, and Answers in Genesis ran a January 2007 piece treating it as evidence dinosaurs survived to historic times. Even Creation magazine, published by Creation Ministries International, ran its own back-page feature the same year raising the claim, then followed up more cautiously.
The carving doesn't strengthen that case even on its own terms. The same round, radiating background pattern appears carved behind other, unambiguous animals nearby on the same temple wall (a rhinoceros, water buffalo, and monkeys among them), which is the strongest evidence the "plates" are decorative foliage (stylized palm fronds or lotus leaves) rather than a spine of bony plates. A genuine stegosaur reconstruction also has paired, alternating plates and prominent tail spikes; this carving has neither. And even if it were a deliberate anachronism, it wouldn't actually move the debate: Stegosaurus dates to the Late Jurassic, roughly 150 million years before the Khmer Empire carved this wall, a gap so large that it dwarfs anything young-earth chronology needs: a framework that already allows for humans and dinosaurs overlapping by mere thousands of years, not tens of millions. Job 40-41 either supports that overlap on its own, or it doesn't; this carving can't add anything the text hasn't already claimed.
