The Fringe Files

Ancient aliens, lost civilisations and the occult, checked against what the sources actually say.

The hills near Visoko, Bosnia are actually ancient pyramids, bigger and older than Egypt's, built by a lost advanced civilization that mainstream archaeology refuses to acknowledge.

The Visoko hills are ordinary geological formations, not pyramids, and Genesis already describes real, sophisticated ancient city-building without needing a secret lost civilization to explain it.

What is actually going on

In 2005, Bosnian-American writer Semir Osmanagić announced that a cluster of hills near Visoko, including one he named the 'Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun,' were in fact the largest pyramids on Earth, built by an unknown ancient civilization and buried under soil and vegetation for millennia. The claim spread fast and drew tourists, but it did not hold up to actual fieldwork. In 2006, a group of seven European archaeologists working through the European Association of Archaeologists issued a signed statement calling the project a 'cruel hoax' on the public with 'no place in the world of genuine science,' pointing out that the hills are naturally occurring clastic sedimentary formations: the same kind of angular, flatiron-shaped hills produced by ordinary tectonic uplift and erosion found throughout the region. Egyptologist Zahi Hawass, who reviewed the claims, reached the same conclusion, noting among other things that the 'building blocks' Osmanagić pointed to as evidence weighed roughly 40 tons apiece (far beyond what any ancient human workforce could have quarried and placed at that location) and remarked that Osmanagić 'must be hallucinating.' No excavation at Visoko has produced worked masonry courses, foundations, tool marks, or datable construction material consistent with an actual built structure; what's there is what geologists say hills naturally do.

But the impulse underneath the claim deserves to be taken seriously, because that part isn't crazy: people want physical proof that ancient humanity was capable of something genuinely impressive, and they reach for a hidden lost civilization to supply it. Scripture doesn't need one. Genesis 10-11 describes exactly that kind of organized, technologically capable, city-building humanity in the real ancient Near East in the generations after the Flood, and unlike Visoko, there is actual excavated archaeology behind it. The Tower of Babel narrative in Genesis 11:1-9 describes people using kiln-fired brick 'instead of stone' and bitumen 'instead of mortar' to build a city and 'a tower with its top in the heavens' on a plain in the land of Shinar: a precise, technically accurate description of Mesopotamian ziggurat construction. Historians and archaeologists widely connect this to Etemenanki, the great ziggurat of Babylon (its name, Sumerian for 'Temple of the Foundation of Heaven and Earth'), whose ruins were excavated by German archaeologist Robert Koldewey starting in 1913. Old Testament scholar John Walton, in his article 'The Mesopotamian Background of the Tower of Babel' (Bulletin for Biblical Research), and the Bible Odyssey project both lay out the detailed correspondence between the text and known ziggurat construction, and National Geographic's own coverage of the site calls Etemenanki 'the leading contender' for a real building standing behind the Babel account. Whether Etemenanki itself is the very structure Genesis 11 has in view can't be proven archaeologically (the text and the ruins can't be definitively matched to each other), but the type of building, the materials, the location, and the ambition are all real, attested, excavated Mesopotamian facts.

That's the actual contrast worth drawing. Visoko offers a rumor of lost-civilization engineering with no worked stone to show for it. Genesis 10-11 offers organized post-Flood humanity building real cities and towers in a landscape where roughly thirty ziggurats have actually been excavated, using construction techniques the text gets right down to the mortar. The Bible's ancient world was sophisticated enough without inventing a hidden one.
