Who this is

Jonathan was Saul's eldest son and heir to Israel's throne, best remembered for his loyal friendship with David, a friendship sealed with a covenant even though Jonathan knew it meant giving up his own claim to the kingship. Early in his father's reign he single-handedly triggered a rout of the Philistine army by climbing a cliff with only his armor-bearer and trusting that God could win with few as easily as with many. He died alongside Saul and two brothers at the battle of Mount Gilboa, and David's lament over him, "your love to me was wonderful, surpassing the love of women," is one of the most quoted lines in the Old Testament.
