Galatians 3:23-29, The law as a guardian until faith came

Before faith came, Paul says, we were held in custody under the law, which served as a guardian until Christ; now all who have been baptized into Christ are God's children, one in him, Abraham's seed and heirs.

What is going on here

Paul describes the law as a guardian that kept God's people under watch until Christ came and faith was revealed. The guardian was the household slave who supervised a boy until he came of age, so now that faith has come that supervision is over. All who have been baptized into Christ are God's children and have put him on like clothing, and in him the divisions of Jew and Greek, slave and free, male and female no longer define them; they are Abraham's offspring and heirs.

Also in this passage

Jewish traditions divided history into stages, and Paul makes the law a temporary stage until the promise (Keener and his notes). The guardian was the slave who walked a boy to school and watched his manners, not the teacher, and the role ended when a boy came of age at about thirteen or fourteen (Keener and his notes; the CSB Study Bible); the King James Version's schoolmaster is the rendering Wright corrects. How the image sounds is weighed differently. The ESV Study Bible gives the guardian positive tasks, restraining transgressions and pointing ahead to Christ; Keener and his notes call the picture not demeaning in itself but shocking to Jewish thinkers, who called the law their teacher. Gentiles converting to Judaism were baptized, naked, and then reclothed, and writers spoke of being clothed with virtues (Keener and his notes). Some Greeks thanked the deity that they were not made animals, women or non-Greeks, and some Jewish teachers thanked God that they were not made Gentiles, women or ignorant, in some versions slaves (the cultural backgrounds notes). Some cults claimed to ignore social divisions but rarely did (Keener).
