John 7:1-36, Up to the Festival of Tabernacles

Jesus stays in Galilee while the Judeans look for a chance to kill him, then goes up to Tabernacles privately and teaches in the temple. The crowds argue over whether he is a deceiver or the Messiah, and the chief priests send guards to arrest him.

What is going on here

Jesus keeps to Galilee because the Judeans want to kill him, and his brothers, who do not believe in him, urge him to show himself at the Festival of Tabernacles. He says his time has not yet come, then goes up privately, and halfway through the feast begins teaching in the temple. People marvel that he knows so much without having studied; some call him a good man and others say he leads the people astray. He defends healing on the Sabbath by pointing to circumcision, the crowd argues over whether the Messiah's origins would be known, and the chief priests and Pharisees send officers to arrest him.

Also in this passage

Galilee under Antipas and Judea under the Roman prefect were separate jurisdictions, so a man in trouble in one could be safer in the other (Keener and his notes). Pious Galilean men were expected at the feast, and Keener notes that Josephus speaks of whole towns going. Teachers lectured in the temple's porticoes; Jesus had not studied with an advanced teacher, yet he taught without citing earlier authorities (Keener and his notes). Leading the people astray was a capital charge under Deuteronomy 13 (Keener and his notes). Circumcision on the eighth day overrode the Sabbath, so, arguing from lesser to greater, healing a whole person should too (Keener and his notes; the ESV Study Bible). Some expected a hidden Messiah, a tradition known from later sources (Keener and his notes), and the ESV Study Bible says some rabbis taught that he would be unknown while others were sure of his birthplace. The chief priests could send Levite temple guards (Keener and his notes). The cultural backgrounds article on the Jews in John notes that here, as often, the word means the Judean leaders, which is how the NIV renders it in 7:1 and 7:11.
