Revelation 22:1-5, river and tree of life

The angel shows John a clear, life-giving river running from God's throne through the middle of the city, with the tree of life on both banks, fruiting every month and healing the nations with its leaves. Nothing cursed remains; God's servants will see him face to face, carry his name and reign for ever in his light.

What is going on here

John is shown a sparkling river of life flowing from the shared throne of God and the Lamb through the center of the city, with the tree of life growing on both sides, fruiting all year and bearing leaves that heal the nations. Nothing under God's curse remains. God's servants will live in his presence, see him face to face and bear his name, ruling for ever in a city that needs no lamp or sun because God himself is its light. Whether the tree is one or many, and what the healing of the nations means, are debated.

The river joins Ezekiel 47's river from the temple with Eden's river in Genesis 2:10 and the living waters of Zechariah 14:8 (the cultural backgrounds notes; Keener; Beale; Wright). At the Feast of Tabernacles priests poured water at the altar to signify that "rivers of living water would flow from the temple", and Ezekiel 47 and Zechariah 14 were read on its last day (the cultural backgrounds article Tabernacles and the Promise of Living Water). Later Jewish texts pictured the end as Eden restored (the cultural backgrounds notes; Keener). Ezekiel 47:12 has trees fruiting every month, and some traditions counted twelve trees (the cultural backgrounds notes; Keener). One tree or many is read differently: one source of life (the cultural backgrounds notes), a collective singular for Ezekiel's trees (Beale), or trees in profusion (Wright). Heiser reads the healing of the nations as Babel undone: in his book God reclaims the nations given to lesser gods (Deuteronomy 32:8-9), and in the podcast they become one family, with no disease to cure. No more curse echoes Zechariah 14:11 and undoes Genesis 3 (Keener; the ESV Study Bible), and Jewish hope included seeing God's face (Keener).
