Abner was Saul's cousin and the commander of his army, and after Saul's death Abner kept the war between David and Saul's house going for years by installing Saul's surviving son Ish-bosheth as a rival king. Abner eventually defected to David's side after a personal insult from Ish-bosheth, but Joab, David's own general, murdered him in revenge for killing Joab's brother in an earlier battle, a killing David publicly mourned and condemned even though it benefited him politically.
