First, in plain English

God called him out of Ur and he went at seventy-five, which is most of what you need to know about him. The nation came out of that.

In Luke

Luke's most-cited Old Testament figure outside the genealogy: ‘father Abraham’ anchors the whole parable of the rich man and Lazarus (16:22-31). Josephus, writing for a Roman audience a generation after Luke, makes the same figure into the first monotheist philosopher, a very different rhetorical job, same man. Philo also gave him his own dedicated treatise, reading his whole life as one long act of obedience, a third independent voice (with Luke and Josephus) on the same figure.

Who this is

Abraham was called by God out of Ur to become the father of a new nation, leaving his home at seventy-five with his wife Sarah and a promise that had no visible way of coming true, since Sarah was childless and both of them were old. He eventually fathered Ishmael through Sarah's servant Hagar and then Isaac through Sarah herself after God renamed him from Abram, and Genesis traces the rest of his life through Canaan in altars, wells, and one wrenching test on Mount Moriah. Clay tablets from Nuzi, written centuries after Abraham but preserving the same Hurrian legal customs, explain a strange line in his own story: his fear that a servant named Eliezer would inherit everything reflects a real adoption practice for childless couples, not an invented plot device.
