Achan was an Israelite who secretly kept plunder from Jericho, a Babylonian garment and hidden silver and gold, in direct violation of God's command that everything in the city be devoted to destruction or given to the treasury. His theft caused Israel's next battle, at the small city of Ai, to end in a humiliating defeat, and once Achan was identified by lot he confessed and was executed along with his family and possessions.
