First, in plain English

David's fourth son. With his older brothers dead, he was the presumed heir. He tried to have himself crowned while David was still dying, and left Solomon, Nathan and Benaiah off the invitation.

Who this is

Adonijah was David's fourth son and, with his older brothers dead, the presumed heir to the throne, so he tried to have himself crowned king while David was still dying, without inviting Solomon, Nathan the prophet, or Benaiah. Nathan and Bathsheba intervened, and David ordered Solomon anointed king immediately, collapsing Adonijah's attempted coup. Adonijah survived that failure only to be executed soon after for requesting marriage to one of David's former attendants, a request Solomon read as a renewed claim on the throne.
