Saul had promised his elder daughter Merab to David, then gave her to Adriel instead. Their five sons were later handed over to the Gibeonites.
Adriel, son of Barzillai the Meholathite, married Merab, Saul's elder daughter, after Saul withdrew her from his earlier promise to give her to David (1 Samuel 18:19). Their five sons were later handed over to the Gibeonites and executed as part of the reparations for Saul's earlier massacre of Gibeonite lives (2 Samuel 21:8-9); a textual difficulty in that passage names Michal rather than Merab as the mother, which most interpreters resolve either as scribal confusion between the two sisters or as Michal having raised her sister's sons.
