Ahithophel was David's most trusted counselor, so respected that his advice was regarded as equal to consulting God directly, and his defection to Absalom's rebellion was one of the most devastating betrayals of David's reign. When Absalom rejected Ahithophel's sound military advice in favor of a rival counselor's plan, Ahithophel recognized the rebellion was doomed, went home, put his affairs in order, and hanged himself.
