The same name traced across the biblical canon and the Second Temple texts, side by side.
Ai
A fortified Canaanite city near Bethel. Israel's first attack was thrown back because of Achan's hidden sin, and once that was dealt with Joshua took the city by ambush. The site is usually identified with et-Tell, though digging there has turned up little from the right period.

Ai was a fortified Canaanite city near Bethel that first repelled an overconfident Israelite attack because of Achan's hidden sin, then fell to Joshua's ambush once the sin was dealt with, becoming the second Canaanite city Israel captured. It was later resettled by Benjaminites returning from exile. The site is usually identified with et-Tell, though excavations there have found little significant Late Bronze Age occupation matching the traditional conquest period, a discrepancy that continues to divide scholars over the city's exact location or the dating of the conquest. A separate, minor Ai in Ammonite territory is mentioned once by Jeremiah.
