Amasa was David's nephew who commanded Absalom's rebel army during the uprising, and David surprisingly offered him command of the entire royal army afterward as part of reconciling with Absalom's former supporters, a move that provoked Joab's jealousy; Joab murdered Amasa shortly after by stabbing him while pretending to greet him with a kiss.
