Amraphel was the king of Shinar, in southern Mesopotamia, who joined Chedorlaomer of Elam and two other kings in a campaign against the cities of the plain, including Sodom, described in Genesis 14. Older scholarship once proposed identifying him with the famous Babylonian king Hammurabi, whose law code survives on a well-known stone stele, but most scholars today consider the equation linguistically and chronologically doubtful.
