Anammelech was a deity worshipped by the people of Sepharvaim, a Mesopotamian population the Assyrians resettled in Samaria after deporting the northern kingdom of Israel in 722 BC (2 Kings 17:31). The colonists reportedly burned their children in fire to Anammelech and its companion god Adrammelech, a practice associated in the ancient Near East with Molech worship. Assyrian resettlement policy of this kind is well attested in Assyrian royal inscriptions, including those of Sargon II, who claims credit for Samaria's conquest.
