An elderly prophetess of the tribe of Asher who, widowed after only seven years of marriage, spent decades in the Jerusalem temple in prayer and fasting (Luke 2:36-37). She arrived at the temple the same day Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus for presentation, just after the aged Simeon had spoken his own prophecy over the child, and she went on to speak of Jesus to others looking for Jerusalem's redemption. Luke pairs her with Simeon as a second, independent witness confirming the child's significance at the very start of his account.
