Arad was a Canaanite city about 20 miles south of Hebron whose king attacked Israel as they approached Canaan from the south, taking prisoners, before Israel destroyed the town under the ban (Numbers 21:1-3; 33:40); it was later subdued by Joshua's forces (Joshua 12:14). The name also belongs to a descendant of Benjamin through Beriah (1 Chronicles 8:15). Excavations at Tel Arad have uncovered both a Canaanite city and, on a nearby hill, a fortified Israelite citadel with its own small temple, among the few Israelite sanctuaries yet excavated outside Jerusalem.
