Archelaus (Ethnarch living at the time of the New Testament)
Herod the Great's son. He inherited Judea, Samaria and Idumea and ruled them as ethnarch, harshly enough that his own subjects sent a delegation to Rome against him, and Augustus deposed him and exiled him to Gaul. Joseph settled in Galilee coming back from Egypt because Archelaus was reigning in Judea.

Son of Herod the Great, who inherited Judea, Samaria, and Idumea after his father's death and ruled them as ethnarch. His harsh rule prompted a delegation of his own subjects to petition Rome against him, and Augustus eventually deposed and exiled him to Gaul. Joseph's decision to settle in Galilee rather than Judea on returning from Egypt was made because Archelaus was reigning there (Matthew 2:22).
