One of two sons of Saul by his concubine Rizpah, handed over by David to the Gibeonites and executed to atone for Saul's earlier slaughter of Gibeonites in violation of Israel's ancient treaty with them (2 Sam. 21:1-9). Rizpah's subsequent vigil guarding his exposed body, and that of his brother Mephibosheth, from scavenging animals became one of the Old Testament's most striking images of grief and finally moved David to give the dead a proper burial.
