Asher
Jacob's eighth son, by Leah's servant Zilpah. His tribe got a fertile coastal strip in the north, running toward Phoenicia, some of the richest land in Israel. Beyond its borders and city list little of the tribe's own history is recorded, and like Simeon it produced no judge or great hero.

Asher was Jacob's eighth son, born to Leah's servant Zilpah, and the tribe descended from him received a fertile coastal strip in northern Canaan running toward Phoenicia, described in Joshua as containing some of the richest land in Israel. Little is recorded of the tribe's individual history beyond its territorial boundaries and city list, and along with Simeon it produced no judge or major hero in the biblical narrative. Anna the prophetess, who recognized the infant Jesus in the temple, is identified in Luke as being of the tribe of Asher.
