Asshurim (People, perhaps from Asshur)

One of the regions Abner made Ish-bosheth king over after Saul's death, with Gilead, Jezreel, Ephraim and Benjamin. Assyria was far beyond Israel's reach then, so most read it as a scribal slip for Asherites, the land of Asher.

Who this is

Asshurim (also rendered Ashurites) names one of the regions over which Abner made Saul's son Ish-bosheth king after Saul's death, listed alongside Gilead, Jezreel, Ephraim, and Benjamin. Since Assyria itself lay far outside Israelite control at this date, most read the word as a scribal variant of Asherites, referring to territory belonging to the tribe of Asher, rather than to the distant Assyrian nation.
