Baal-berith, meaning "lord of the covenant," was not a person but a Canaanite god worshipped at Shechem after Gideon's death, when Israel again fell into idolatry (Judges 8:33). The same shrine is later called simply the house of the god "El-berith" or "Berith," and it funded the violent bid for kingship by Gideon's son Abimelech (Judges 9:4, 46).
