Beth-Arbel
Hosea remembers it as a byword for slaughter: as Shalman spoiled Beth-arbel in the day of battle, when mothers were dashed to pieces with their children.
Hosea remembers it as a byword for slaughter: as Shalman spoiled Beth-arbel in the day of battle, when mothers were dashed to pieces with their children.
A town alluded to in Hosea 10:14 as the site of a brutal military destruction, "as Shalman spoiled Beth-arbel in the day of battle," where mothers were dashed to pieces along with their children. "Shalman" is generally taken as a shortened form of Shalmaneser, likely the Assyrian king Shalmaneser V. Many identify the town with Arbela in Galilee, near cliffs riddled with caves that Josephus later described as a refuge and a site of violent conflict.
