Who this is

Beth-aven, "house of vanity," was a place in the hill country of Benjamin near Ai and Bethel, used as a boundary marker in the conquest narrative (Joshua 7:2; 18:12) and as the staging ground for Israelite forces before Jonathan's raid on the Philistine garrison at Michmash (1 Samuel 13:5; 14:23). Hosea later applies the name mockingly to Bethel itself, turning its old meaning, "house of God," into "house of idols" to condemn the golden calf shrine Jeroboam had set up there (Hosea 4:15; 5:8; 10:5).
