"House of the vineyard," a Judean town whose ruler, Malchiah, helped repair a section of Jerusalem's wall under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 3:14), and which Jeremiah names as a place to raise a signal fire warning of invasion from the north (Jeremiah 6:1). Many archaeologists identify it with Ramat Rahel, a hill between Jerusalem and Bethlehem where excavations have uncovered a substantial fortified Judean royal compound from the Iron Age, along with stamped storage-jar handles used in the kingdom's royal administration.
