Beth-maachah appears in the account of Sheba's revolt against David, where the rebel fled north and was besieged inside the city until its residents threw his head over the wall to end the siege, on the advice of a wise woman from the town (2 Samuel 20:14-22). It was closely associated with, and possibly identical to, the small Aramean kingdom of Maachah on Israel's northern frontier, later absorbed along with Abel-beth-maachah into Assyrian territory under Tiglath-pileser III, an annexation recorded in that king's own inscriptions (2 Kings 15:29).
