Beth-zur was a fortified town in the hill country of Judah, a few miles north of Hebron, that Rehoboam strengthened as part of a defensive network protecting his kingdom after the ten northern tribes seceded (2 Chronicles 11:7). It later became a key strategic site in the Maccabean wars against the Seleucids. Excavations at the site, Khirbet et-Tubeiqa, conducted by William Albright and Ovid Sellers in the 1930s, uncovered occupation layers running from the Middle Bronze Age through the Hellenistic period, confirming the town's long strategic importance guarding the road from Hebron to Jerusalem.
