Bithynia was a Roman province on the southern shore of the Black Sea where Paul attempted to go but was prevented by the Spirit (Acts 16:7), and where a Christian community had taken root by the time Peter addressed his first letter to believers scattered across the region (1 Peter 1:1). Bithynia's Christian population is independently confirmed a generation or two later by the governor Pliny the Younger's letter to Trajan, in which he describes interrogating believers there and asks the emperor how to handle prosecutions for the name alone.
