First, in plain English

A wealthy landowner in Bethlehem, related to Naomi's dead husband Elimelech. He noticed Ruth, the widowed Moabite, gleaning behind his harvesters, and he agreed to act as kinsman-redeemer.

In Luke

David's great-grandfather, one line in Luke's genealogy (3:32). Josephus retells the whole Book of Ruth as its own episode (spelling the name 'Booz'), explicitly naming the payoff Luke's genealogy is really built toward: the line running straight to David.

Who this is

Boaz was a wealthy landowner in Bethlehem and a relative of Naomi's late husband Elimelech, and he first noticed the widowed Moabite Ruth gleaning grain behind his harvesters. He agreed to exercise the right of a kinsman-redeemer, marrying Ruth and buying back her deceased husband's property after a closer relative declined the responsibility, and their son Obed became the grandfather of David. Boaz also became the name given to one of the two bronze pillars Solomon set up at the entrance of the temple.
