Capernaum was a fishing town on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee that Jesus made his base of operations after leaving Nazareth, calling it “his own city.” Several of his best known miracles and teachings took place there, including the healing of a centurion's servant and the bread of life discourse in its synagogue, yet Jesus also pronounced judgment on the town for its unbelief. The site, Tell Hum, has been excavated to reveal a limestone synagogue built over the basalt foundations of an earlier first century structure, along with an octagonal Byzantine church built over a house identified by ancient graffiti as Peter's, matching the Gospels' description of Jesus staying at Peter's house there.
