Damascene designates an inhabitant of Damascus, used by Paul when he recalls how the ethnarch under King Aretas guarded the city to arrest him, forcing Paul to escape by being lowered over the wall in a basket. Damascus is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and Aretas IV, the Nabatean king in view, is well attested on coins and inscriptions from the period.
