Damascus
A city has stood here, on a fertile plain watered by the Barada northwest of Mount Hermon, since before the patriarchs. It was the Aramean capital that fought Israel through the ninth and eighth centuries BC. Saul was converted on the road into it, and the street called Straight was a real colonnaded street whose columns have been found.

Damascus sits in a fertile plain northwest of Mount Hermon, watered by the river Barada, which is why a city has stood on this spot without a real break since before the patriarchs. It served as the capital of the Aramean kingdom that fought Israel through the ninth and eighth centuries BC, and centuries later it was on the road into this same city that Saul was converted (Acts 9). The street the New Testament calls Straight was a real colonnaded thoroughfare running through Roman Damascus, and remains of its columns have been found.
