Daniel (Prophet living at the time of Exile and Return)

Taken to Babylon as a young noble and renamed by his captors (Daniel 1:6-7). Josephus tells the exact same scene, the deportation, the new Babylonian name, Daniel becoming Belteshazzar, as straight political history, no different in kind from any other royal hostage of the era.

Two men named Daniel appear in the Old Testament. The one people usually mean is the prophet carried off to Babylon as a young noble of Judah, who rose to high office under three different empires while refusing to compromise his faith, surviving a night in a lion's den for it and receiving visions that stretch to the book's final chapter. The other Daniel was David's second son, born in Hebron to Abigail and also called Chileab, a figure who otherwise disappears from the record entirely.
