Fact Book

The same name traced across the biblical canon and the Second Temple texts, side by side.

Dura

Nebuchadnezzar set up his golden image on this plain near Babylon, and Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to bow to it. The name probably comes from an Akkadian word for a walled enclosure, so it is more a kind of place than one spot, and no site has been fixed.

First, in plain English

Nebuchadnezzar set up his golden image on this plain near Babylon, and Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to bow to it. The name probably comes from an Akkadian word for a walled enclosure, so it is more a kind of place than one spot, and no site has been fixed.

Who this is

The plain of Dura, near Babylon, was where Nebuchadnezzar set up the golden image that all his officials were summoned to worship, the scene of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego's refusal and their deliverance from the furnace (Daniel 3:1-30). "Dura" likely derives from a common Akkadian word for a walled enclosure, which would make it more a type of place than a single proper name, and several sites near Babylon carried variants of it. No firm identification of this particular plain has been established.
