Edomites were the descendants of Esau, Jacob's brother, settled in the rugged region south and east of the Dead Sea known as Seir, and Israel's relationship with them was marked by recurring conflict despite their shared ancestry. Edom is attested in Egyptian records from as early as the thirteenth century BC and later developed into an organized kingdom whose capital, Busayra, and copper mining sites at Khirbat en Nahas have been excavated, confirming a real Edomite state during the period the Bible describes.
