In Genesis 10 and 1 Chronicles 1 Egypt is a person, one of the fathers in the list of nations.
Egypt was Israel's neighbor to the south and, across different periods, both its refuge and its oppressor: Joseph rose to power there and saved his family from famine, but generations later a new pharaoh enslaved their descendants, setting up the exodus. Egypt reappears throughout the Old Testament as a byword for the old life of slavery Israel was delivered from, and Matthew records that Jesus's own family fled there briefly to escape Herod's massacre of infants, framing Jesus as reliving Israel's own exodus story.
