Elijah was a prophet from Tishbe in Gilead who confronted King Ahab and Queen Jezebel over Israel's slide into Baal worship, most famously by challenging 450 prophets of Baal to a fire-from-heaven contest on Mount Carmel and winning outright. He fled into the wilderness in despair immediately afterward, convinced he was the last faithful Israelite left, until God met him not in wind or earthquake or fire but in a quiet voice. Elijah never died in the ordinary sense: 2 Kings ends his story with a whirlwind and a chariot of fire that carried him up to heaven while his successor Elisha watched.
