The same name traced across the biblical canon and the Second Temple texts, side by side.

Elisha (Prophet living at the time of Divided Monarchy)

A farmer's son who was ploughing when Elijah threw his cloak over him. He left the oxen, followed, and asked for a double portion of Elijah's spirit when the older man was taken up. His miracles run from poisoned water made clean to Naaman healed of leprosy, and a dead man thrown into his tomb came back to life when he touched the bones.

First, in plain English

A farmer's son who was ploughing when Elijah threw his cloak over him. He left the oxen, followed, and asked for a double portion of Elijah's spirit when the older man was taken up. His miracles run from poisoned water made clean to Naaman healed of leprosy, and a dead man thrown into his tomb came back to life when he touched the bones.

In Luke

Paired with Elijah in Jesus's own synagogue sermon (4:27), the same pairing Josephus uses to introduce him: 'Elisha, the son of Shaphat, the disciple of Elijah,' called on by three kings stranded without water in the wilderness.

Who this is

Elisha was a wealthy farmer's son who left his oxen in the field to follow Elijah after the older prophet threw his cloak over him, and he inherited Elijah's ministry, and by his own request a double portion of his spirit, when Elijah was taken up in the whirlwind. He performed roughly twice as many miracles as Elijah, from purifying poisoned water and multiplying a widow's oil to raising a dead boy and healing the Aramean general Naaman of leprosy, and his ministry spanned the reigns of four different kings of Israel. Even his bones kept working after his death: 2 Kings records a corpse tossed into Elisha's tomb coming back to life the moment it touched his remains.
