First, in plain English

Who this is

Esek is not a person but a well that Isaac's herdsmen dug in the valley of Gerar; the name means "contention" or "quarrel," because Philistine herdsmen from Gerar disputed Isaac's claim to the water (Genesis 26:20). It was the first of three wells dug during that dispute, the others being Sitnah and the uncontested Rehoboth.
