Who this is

Eshbaal, "man of Baal," was the fourth son of King Saul (1 Chronicles 8:33; 9:39). He is better known by the name Ish-bosheth, "man of shame" (2 Samuel 2:8), a substitution that reflects later Israelite discomfort with the word "Baal" even inside personal names. After Saul's death, Abner made Eshbaal king over the northern tribes for a brief, troubled reign that ended in his assassination, clearing the way for David to rule over a united Israel (2 Samuel 2-4).
