Esther (Woman living at the time of Exile and Return) - Fact Book

First, in plain English

An orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai in Susa, she became queen when Ahasuerus put away his first wife. When Haman plotted to wipe out the Jews she went to the king uninvited, at the risk of her life, and Haman ended on his own gallows. The book never names God, and Purim still keeps the day.

Worth knowing

The orphaned Jewish girl who becomes queen of Persia and saves her people from Haman's plot (Esther 2-9), in a book that famously never names God once. Josephus retells the whole story at length under his own chapter title, the same three names, Esther, Mordecai, Haman, in the same order.

Who this is

Esther was a Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai in the Persian capital of Susa who became queen after King Ahasuerus, usually identified with Xerxes, deposed his previous wife. When the king's official Haman plotted to exterminate the Jewish people, Esther risked her life by approaching the king uninvited, and her intervention saved her people and got Haman executed on the gallows he had built for Mordecai. The book that bears her name never mentions God directly, but Jews still celebrate the deliverance every year at Purim.
