Etham was the third encampment of the Israelites after leaving Egypt, on the edge of the wilderness near the eastern fortification line known as the Wall of Egypt (Exodus 13:20; Numbers 33:6-8). From there God directed Moses to turn back toward Pi-hahiroth, a change of route intended to lure Pharaoh into pursuit (Exodus 14:1-4). Its exact location is unknown, though it lay somewhere near the northern end of the Gulf of Suez.
