Who this is

Gamaliel was a highly respected Pharisee and legal scholar who persuaded the Jewish council to release the apostles rather than execute them, arguing that if their movement wasn't from God it would collapse on its own. He was also the teacher under whom the young Saul, later Paul, studied the law.
