The same name traced across the biblical canon and the Second Temple texts, side by side.
Gath
Goliath's hometown, one of the five Philistine cities. The captured ark brought disaster on it, David later hid there with King Achish while running from Saul, and in the end David took it. Most identify it with Tell es-Safi, where a potsherd turned up carrying two names related to Goliath.

Gath was one of the five chief Philistine cities and the hometown of Goliath, whom David killed, though David himself later took refuge there with its king Achish while fleeing Saul. The ark caused disaster among the Philistines after they captured it and brought it to Gath, and David eventually conquered the city outright. It is usually identified with Tell es-Safi, where excavations have uncovered a massive siege system and a potsherd inscribed with two names philologically related to “Goliath,” evidence that such names were genuinely in use at Gath around the era described in Samuel.
